Any Psychological After Effects?

Undergoing abortion is a stressful event in life. Most often people go through a range of psychological and emotional responses. According to the American Pregnancy  Association, common negative feelings include:

  • Guilt
  • Anger
  • Shame
  • Remorse or regret
  • Loss of self-esteem or self-confidence
  • Feelings of isolation and loneliness
  • Sleep problems and bad dreams
  • Relationship problems
  • Thoughts of suicide.

Besides, some people may experience grief, stress, or a sense of loss and may feel less able to cope. If suicidal thoughts or self-harm occur, the person should seek urgent help.

The psychological impact of abortion is often neglected in the debate. Abortion is an irreversible choice. The burden of this choice will always be a weight to carry. Abortion can indeed make a woman “non-pregnant”, but we can never make a woman “non-mother”.

A mother is always a mother once she becomes pregnant. Once a mother, always a mother, whether the child is born or not. Won’t the choice to destroy one’s child always haunt the parent?
